About Harris Tweed:
Off Scotland's north west coast, buffeted by the wild
winds and rain of the Atlantic Ocean, lie the Outer Hebrides,
a string of barren, mountainous islands. These islands
are the home of Harris Tweed. |
In the 1840's Lady Dunmore, wife of the Laird of the islands,
realized that the cloth woven by the islanders to protect
themselves from the harsh environment had a market beyond
the islands and Harris Tweed was born.
To this day Harris Tweed is hand woven from pure wool by
crofters in their homes. The regulations governing the manufacture
of Harris Tweed are laid down by an Act of the British Parliament.
Harris Tweed is regularly featured in the collections of
the world's best known designers.
